Help In Finding Your Niche

It was not until fairly recently that I realised that I had operated the same sort of business for close to thirty years. Even though the businesses ranged from retail to furniture design and Sports, they were all (to my surprise to some extent) the same sort of business.

Although some business analysts call them SME's (small or medium enterprises) or further subdivide them to Micro Business (less than 20 employees), I further categorise them as Independant Niche Enterprises or INE's.

Sports Centres are INE's and Smart Space is specifically designed to cater for this type of business.

What Are INE's

INE's cater to only a limited percentage of the general population. These potential customers could be:

  • People with specific needs
  • Enthusiasts who consume a lot of the product or service on offer
  • Those who wish to "sample" something different

Challenges OF INE's

Because of the specific challenges in managing and promoting this type of business, specific strategies need to be put in place to ensure financial success.

Not enough has been done to promote good business practice in Sports Centres. Many still use outdated practices which are ineffective at best and counterproductive at worst. Once we realise what sort of business we have, the raod ahead becomes clearer.

Strategy Matrix

The matrix of strategies which are necessary to maintain and improve business include:

  • Looking after the enthusiasts
    • Their needs change
    • Don't wear them out
    • Provide them with the best possible service
  • Identify those who need your products and/or services
    • Be visible for those who are looking for your service
    • Communicate your message clearly
    • Communicate with those organisations who have a high percentage of those who want/need your service
  • Ensure "Samplers" are taken care of
    • Provide the best possible experience to ensure the "sample" they receive is attractive
    • Don't let them ignore your service
    • Maintain communications with them
    • Turn them into enthusiasts
  • Broaden your scope if possible
    • Offer associated services
    • Use current enthusiasts to spread the word
