Using SmartSpace to Publish Specials

A client had a link from their main menu to a page which held the current "Special of the Month". Each month she would change the content of the page. She would promote this page through a  monthly mailout to subscribers.

However, a person who might see this page come up in a search engine, might consider the content out of date when seeing the results on the Search page. It also makes it harder to see how effective each month's promotion really is, as you cannot definitively tell where the clicks have come from.

Instead, I suggested that she create a new page for each month which may help the content to maintain relevance and increase the chance of a potential client clicking the search result, instead of bypassing it for something more relevant.  It is also easier to keep a tight track on the click throughs from the promotional email.

New Landing Page Process

Here is one way on how this can be done in SmartSpace...

  1. Go to the last month's special in the Membership Manager, click Edit and alter it as required
    • Rename it as August Special or whatever the month is
    • In the process click "View Advanced Settings"
    • Insert other relevant information in the Page description, addtional page title, page name and page tags fields
  2. Tick the box which says "Save As New" - important
    • This saves the record as a new one and leaves the old one as is
  3. Update the record edit as required until it is satisfactory
    • On the resultant page, click Category (icon) to return to the Specials (or whatever your category name is) category
  4. On the previous month's record, click "Unpublish"
    • Where the results of the action are listed, click "Go back to the content category'
  5. On the new record take note of the ID number of the article, then click "Quick Publish"
  6. If this is successfull, click "Website Templates > Main Menu > Configure Main Menu"
    • In the link that leads to your current Specials page, insert the new ID, then click Next at the bottom of the page
    • Return to your website's Home page and refresh the page
    • Check the new Specials link
  7. If the page appears but needs altering, edit as necessary
  8. If the page does not appear, return to the Content Manager and check that you used the correct ID number and check the page again

This will eventually create a Special for each month, which can be used from year to year. it also is more search engine friendly.  Promote your new landing page using your Cusomer Manager, ensuring that you mark the bulk email with the unsubscribe link.

Use Analytics

You can check the results of your work by viewing the Google Analytics for that page.

Leaving the same page in place may help you to get into search results, but lack of relevance may reduce the chance of getting the click from interested visitors
